Baked Beans Recipe

Baked Beans Recipe. I love this time of year because it puts me in a cooking mood and when I cook, I cook from scratch. One of my favorite things to make is baked beans because they turn out perfectly every time in my cast iron cookware dish and because everyone seems to really enjoy eating them. I’ve tried quite a few different recipes and surprisingly enough, I love each and every one of them. I do things a little differently sometimes, like adding in a hot pepper, or ground beef, but the main ingredients are as follows which I got from realhousemoms.com.

Northern Beans, dried

Soak beans overnight, rinse well several times, and cook on the stovetop for 3 hours on medium heat.

Drain beans and add them to your Dutch oven or your 4 quarts cast iron cookware dish. I used my KitchenAid dish.

Cook bacon and chop as suggested. I did not chop mine but wished I had cut it up smaller, after the fact.

Dice onion and poblano pepper or any other type of hot pepper. The recipe above calls for jalapeno peppers. They aren’t hot enough for me. I had to throw in hot pepper. Had to.

Diced Onions

Hot Pepper

The recipe above calls for 1/2 cup of brown sugar. I used a whole cup. I like it sweet. And hot. Sweet and hot.

Again, I’m ignoring the recipe above which calls for 1/4 cup tomato paste. I used 1 full can of tomato sauce instead. I didn’t want to chance to have baked beans that were too thick and dry. FYI next time I’ll use 2 cans of tomato sauce.

Add 1/4 cup of molasses.

I did not have any vegetable broth so I skipped this step. Next time I’ll have vegetable broth on hand.

The recipe above calls for Cayenne pepper, I used Lousiana Hot Sauce. We’re from the country and we like it that way… ♫♫♫♫♫

The below ingredients were not in the above recipe which I only use as a guide anyway. I always add more ingredients to my baked beans no matter which recipe I use as a basic recipe.

1 tablespoon of liquid smoke. Because.

Johnny’s garlic spread, 1 teaspoon. This is some good stuff.

Yummy ketchup.

1/4 cup of mustard.

Add the recommended amount of salt (2 teaspoons) and pepper (1 teaspoon) or add to taste preference.

NOW, either slice up some Oscar Mayer hotdogs (1 pack) or brown a pound of ground beef. This time I used ground beef. Your bacon should be through so let drain while you ground the beef.

Make sure to add any ingredients you haven’t added yet. I almost forgot my hot pepper. Yikes.

All that’s left now is to bake in the oven at 350 {with lid} for about 4 to 5 hours. Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes it doesn’t take this long. Start checking your pot of baked beans every 30 minutes, after 3 hours.

Call the family in. Say, Grace. Eat. Enjoy.
