Foods That You Should Avoid Giving to Your Dog

If you have a dog then you will understand how important it is to keep them happy. When they are begging for food and when they are scrounging, you may feel as though you just want to give in because at the end of the day, it makes them happy, right? The problem that a lot of people don’t realise is that certain foods can really cause a lot of harm to your dogs and it may even cause them to experience a ton of health problems as well.

Alcohol

Alcohol and other beverages can cause your dog to have a decreased level of coordination and it can also cause them to experience diarrhoea as well. They may also go on to experience difficulty breathing and a high level of acidity in the blood. Under no circumstances should you ever give your pets alcohol, and if you suspect that they have then you need to take them to the vet. You will also want to do everything you can to try and render the situation by encouraging them to drink lots of water. Of course, this can all be avoided by not giving your dog the chance to access alcohol. You’ll want to avoid putting wine glasses on the floor and if you know that you have spilt a beer then you need to get it cleaned up as soon as possible.

Avocado

Avocado really is a problem for horses, rabbits, birds and more. The main concern is cardiovascular damage and even death in small birds. Horses and donkeys also experience swollen heads and necks as well, not to mention that avocado can be toxic to dogs as well. A lot of people think that avocado is great for dogs because it is great for humans but this is never the case and you may even find that you cause them long-term damage as a result. So it doesn’t matter how much Rover likes the ‘cado- avoid at all costs.

The Three C’s

Coffee, chocolate and caffeine. These substances all contain methylxanthines and this is most commonly found in cacao seeds. The fruit of this plant is usually used to make coffee and the extract from this can be found in soda as well. If your pet has ingested this then it can cause excessive panting, thirst, vomiting and even excessive urination as well. You may also find that they are hyperactive before they experience an abnormal heart rhythm. This can eventually lead to death. Dark chocolate is way more dangerous when compared to milk, and white chocolate is the safest. That being said, no form of chocolate is safe for your dog and it should be avoided at all cost. It is possible for you to get CBD pet snacks if you want to give them something really special, but chocolate is not the way to go.

Citrus

The peel, fruit and even the leaves from a citrus fruit can contain citric acid. This is an essential oil but it can actually irritate your dog. It can cause them to experience system depression and this is especially the case if they ingest a lot of it. If you give it to them in small doses then they probably won’t cause many problems but they may experience stomach upset and this is something that you will want to avoid.

Coconut

If your dog ingests coconut in a very small amount then there is a high chance that this is not going to cause you any problems. The flesh and milk of the coconut will really cause your pet to have an upset stomach and even diarrhoea as well. For this reason, you should avoid giving your pet anything to do with coconut. This could include coconut milk, coconut out of a tin or anything else related.

So there are plenty of foods that you need to avoid giving to your pet and it is very easy for you to avoid a disaster with them as well. At the end of the day, as long as you are careful and as long as you do everything you can to keep scraps of food out of their reach, you should not have any problems at all. It is even possible for you to bake your own dog treats as well, and when you do this, you can include any tasty treats you want, such as meat or liver. This is great for your dog and they will probably enjoy it way more than they would any of the above foods.

  1. The 3 Cs are the most familiar to me. I remember back in grade school, my Mom warn us to not give chocolates to our dogs as it is toxic for them, or they could gain fat faster. We love our pets, and we make sure they eat the right food to stay healthy and strong.

  2. This is a great post!! I love that you are spreading awareness. My daughter did tons of research on what to feed out pets and I can tell she is passionate about it. She tells me all these things dogs should eat, for example “Did you don’t dogs cant eat grapes! So put away those raisins!” Ha ha, thanks for sharing!

  3. These info is very helpful. We don’t have a dog but we have cats. They really don’t eat anything aside from their cat food. :)

  4. This is such a great post, there are so many things you shouldn’t give a dog and I have to admit I am learning all the time about more things they shouldn’t have! The three C’s surprised me.
