How to Take Care of Your Furniture

The choice of furniture is what gives your home a certain ambiance. However, with a particular material, comes the certain maintenance routine you should adopt. Wooden furniture requires special care, just as the one made of leather does. Therefore, you should know how to keep your furniture clean and protected from damaging and any possible breakage.

If you’re looking for a fabric that will last and look good after many years, leather should be on top of your list. Leather is a natural material, so it’s perfect for both cold winter months and the hot summer. Contrary to the popular belief, it won’t keep you cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Quite just the opposite.

If you accidentally spill a bit of fluid on the furniture, just take a clean absorbent and wipe it off. A lightly moist cloth can be suitable for sticky spills, like chocolate, caramel or jam. Let it dry naturally, and the leather will stay spotless. Too much water and soap can damage the fabric, so avoid using them when you need to remove a stain. Avoid using ammonia water, detergent soaps, abrasive cleaners, varnish, oils, or furniture polish as well.

Since leather is a natural material, if you neglect it, you might end up with discolorations and multiple damages. Perspiration, smoke, grime, grease, dust, and dirt can damage the leather, so it’s essential that you take care of it properly. Keep the furniture away from the sunlight, because the UV rays can cause discoloration in the fabric. What’s more, keep the furniture as far away from fireplaces, space heaters, and heating vents because they’ll cause the dehydration of the leather and eventually make it crack. Leather creams and conditioners are recommended for the maintenance of the coated leather. However, if you’ve chosen the uncoated leather furniture, avoid any conditioners and leather creams because the color of the leather will change.

With a tendency to accumulate dirt, dust and grease, wooden furniture can be difficult to maintain. It’s prone to staining, and it’ll start to lose the original sheen, over time. In order to keep dining tables shiny and beautiful you must dust, clean varnish and wax them regularly. Use a feather duster, a brush, or a rag cloth to dust the wooden shelves, armoires, and desks at least 2-3 times a week. Soap and water are recommended only for hard stains, but you shouldn’t use them regularly. Once you’ve cleaned the furniture with it, wipe over with a dry cloth to prevent staining.

Various natural products you can find in your kitchen cabinet are perfect for cleaning the wooden furniture. Vinegar’s acid will cut through the grease and grime and remove any oily stains. Olive oil is perfect for polishing the furniture. Use lime juice the same way you’d use vinegar, and get the great citrus smell as well.

For the perfect shine, use furniture polish or wax. Make sure you don’t combine the two, but decide for one option. Wax will create a long-lasting coat of sheen. You’ll apply furniture polish much easier, and it’ll evaporate quickly. However, don’t use it too much, because you’ll create a sticky film over the surface.

If you expose wooden furniture to high humidity, you could end up with a damaged table, chair or bed. Therefore, keep them away from humid areas, like attic, basement, or any room where the temperature can go from one extreme to another very fast.

Taking care of the furniture is essential if you want to keep it for many years. Make sure you check out the previous suggestions and maintain your leather and wooden furniture properly, so you can enjoy it for a long time.

These are great tips. I have leather everywhere in my house mainly because I love the material and the ease of cleaning, though my leather is white and some beige. It makes it hard to keep it tidy with 3 kids so I am wiping it almost daily from there stains. I didn’t realise can cause so much damage but it makes sense since it’s the same concept with painting and even curtains. Thanks for sharing those tips! Would love if you can link up to

These are great tips for taking care of your furniture. I know my grandmother always used furniture polish on her wood furniture. Using lime juice on the wood is something I didn’t know you could do but I will be trying that on my coffee table and kitchen table instead of vinegar. I usually use vinegar for cleaning because it cuts grease etc but I will use the lime juice now. Thanks for sharing the tips.
