I was a member of the Girl Scouts as a child and now the girls are. The Girl Scouts was a big influence in my life because I was shy and not very outgoing. They helped me overcome my shyness and I was able to make lifelong friends under the guidance of caring, trained adults. The camping trips and nature adventures stuck with me and I now consider myself an outdoor adventurist. I go all over our state taking nature photos because of my love for nature that started with my Girl Scout family adventures.

With all of the technology available to kids today, getting the right balance of energy and activities is more important than it was during my day. We didn’t have tablets or video games. We didn’t even have a computer when I was a child. I never stayed indoors to play games or sit in front of the pc or TV, in fact, I was always active and enjoyed using my imagination for play. It’s not as easy for me to stress to the kids how important it is to live a healthy, active lifestyle without the help of the Girl Scouts. They’ve been able to inspire the kids in physical activities that I’ve not been able to. Outdoor learning and camping is just a couple of the ways that the Girl Scouts can help.

“From high adventure with kayaking, archery and rock climbing to traditional camps with crafts, singing, hiking and cooking over an open fire, Girl Scout camps give girls an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults.”

Thanks to the Together Counts/Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital campaign, whether you have kids in the Daisies, Brownies, or Juniors, we all can download three free booklets: Healthy Habits Booklet. These free booklets help guide our girls on their journey as they learn to lead active, healthy lifestyles. The kids love to go to camp every year and we even enjoy camping activities as a family. Sometimes we go alone and sometimes we go with friends and their kids. We also love to go hiking and exploring. It’s our time to put away technology and connect as a family to nature. I’m sure you have your own ways to lead healthy and active lifestyles and I’d love to hear about your activities in a comment.
