Today’s world is full of entertainment options, but it seems harder than ever to find something that is really satisfying and that gets rid of boredom. Once you’ve tried walking, cooking, napping, and reorganising your sock drawer, you often feel like you’ve done everything. The problem here isn’t that there’s nothing to do, it’s a lack of creativity. Entertaining yourself needs to take different forms. Often when you reach this stage of boredom, it shows that you’ve moved beyond the ability to satisfy yourself with passive content and need to do something more active.
So, what can you do?
Rank everything that you own into categories
One of the most fun things you can do is think about ranking everything you own into various categories. For example, you could think about which objects you own might survive the apocalypse or what items are probably going to be illegal in 50 years’ time.
When you do this, it’s kind of fun but it also does wonders for your identity. You figure out why the objects that you have in your home are there and what they mean to you. You can also categorize objects into multiple categories. You don’t just have to pick one.
This is the sort of fun game that can keep you going for hours and really provide provocative insights into how you’re living your life.
Indulge in sensory chaos
Another thing you can do to really shock yourself, and change how you feel, is to invoke a sense of sensory chaos. How you do this is very much up to you, and the only limit is your creativity, but there are plenty of ways to do it.
One of the most popular ways is to put on some noise-cancelling headphones with white noise, and then create a touch and smell sensory kit that you can play with while you’re listening to the sound and wearing blindfolds.
What’s odd about this is that it brings you in touch with some of your more repressed senses, if you have any. Most people are so sound and visual dominant that they don’t really pay much attention to their sense of touch, smell, and taste. But when you create this sensory blackout experience, your brain is forced to rely more on these additional senses.
Watch yourself
Another fun thing to do if you’ve never done it before is to watch yourself. This is like a form of people-watching, but the subject is you personally. Most of us don’t really know how we are in real life because we live inside our bodies. We don’t even have a real sense of what we sound like, but when you record and video yourself doing some sort of task, you really get a sense for how other people perceive you and some of the things that you’re doing. You might even pick up on the odd tick here and there.
Once you do this, it can be fun to really analyse yourself. You gain so much more perspective and a real third eye. You can also look at things that you want to change or try recording yourself again, but this time taking on a different disposition, like being overly serious.
Play card games from when you were a kid
Nothing makes you feel more engaged than activating old neural circuits that have been shut down for a long time. This is where playing card games from when you were a kid can really come in handy. For example, if you were a big fan of spider solitaire, you could whack out two decks of cards and start playing. You could also get your friends around for an evening of rummy or poker.
Start your own podcast
If you’re really stuck for something to do, you can start your own podcast. All you need to do is have 10-15 minutes of subject matter you want to cover and then just find a way to make it interesting for your audience. Yes, you’ll need to do some marketing if you want it to be successful, but the purpose of this guide is to introduce you to ideas that simply entertain you when you’ve tried everything else.
Plus, if you decide to start a podcast, you can have fun with investing in all of the kits. You might need a nice microphone or even a camera if you want to stream live online. These additions can be interesting to research, and you can learn a lot about the type of equipment and set-up you need to be really successful.
You could also cover topics that nobody else is covering. You could ask simple questions that kids ask and then turn this into a science show where you really try to get to the bottom of them and answer them.
Do a slow-motion reenactment

If regular re-enactments feel mundane to you, then you could do something in slow motion. Even if this means doing your regular chores in slow motion, it can make them a lot more fun. For example, let’s say that you go to Zumba class every Friday night and join it online. Instead of watching the video at normal speed, you could watch it at 0.25 speed and dramatically slow down your movements to match what’s happening on screen. What’s interesting is that when you do this, it feels much more cinematic and fun. You can also film it while you do it and then post it online to show people what you’ve been up to
Reverse engineer random household items
Lastly, you can have a lot of fun reverse-engineering household items. This exercise teaches you how unbelievably challenging it is to recreate the trappings and modern conveniences of the global economy. For example, even something as simple as creating a shampoo bottle is surprisingly difficult, and it depends how much from scratch you want to do it. Once you succeed though it can be tremendously satisfying, it’s well worth giving it a go.
