Well, of course, you want to be a smart car owner, a smart driver in general, and you want to do what you can to prevent accidents. But at the same time, here, you need to keep in mind that there’s very few things that can spike stress as fast as a car doing something weird. Like, a weird noise, a light on the dash, the car hesitating for half a second, and the brain is fully convinced the entire vehicle is about to collapse into a pile of parts.
But even if you’ve been driving for decades, you get this feeling, and if you’re a brand new driver or grew up with parents that owned horrible and unreliable cars, well, you probably do get anxious the second something doesn’t seem right, right? It’s not even logical; it’s just instant panic, because cars cost money, cars break at the worst times, and nobody wants to deal with it on a random weekday when life’s already busy.
But at the same time, as a driver, as a car owner, you also have to learn that not all “emergencies” with your car are quite literally emergencies. Sometimes, some of them are just regular maintenance or, well, just something every car owner goes through. So it’s more about knowing what to do and actually being prepared.
Yes, Fuel Mistakes are Common
Sure, this is common; everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Like maybe it’s the wrong fuel, nearly empty tank, trusting the range estimate, well, it’s all very human. And it always happens when someone’s tired, distracted, or rushing, which is, honestly, most of the time. Like, if it’s just run out of fuel, it’s embarrassing, but it’s also fixable; it’s usually fuel delivery or recovery, then a quiet moment of self-reflection.
So, it’s already obvious to a degree how this can be prevented, but again, mistakes happen; it’s just accidents. But it still helps to try and do what you can to be prepared, though. So, it helps to know what support exists ahead of time, because standing on the side of the road trying to figure out who to call is not the moment, and yeah, lots of people make that mistake too.
Depending on your car and where you bought it from, you might have CUPRA roadside assistance for that extra safety layer, there’s memberships you can pay monthly for help so you’re not on the side of the road, and some car insurances offer help as well.
Have a Flat Battery?
This one kind of goes with what was being said above. But it’s one of the more classic problems, though. This feels like a major breakdown, but a lot of the time it’s just the battery being weak, old, or drained. For example, maybe it’s due to the interior light left on, short trips all week, cold weather, the car sitting unused, but it adds up. And it’s annoying because it doesn’t feel “fair,” right? The car looks fine, it was fine yesterday, and now, well, no.
If it’s at home, a jump start or a battery charger usually sorts it out. If it’s out somewhere inconvenient, because of course it is, then it’s calling for help, getting it started, then getting the battery tested, because if it’s on its way out, it’ll do it again.
Can You Change a Tire?
Yes, you absolutely need to know how to change a tire! Everyone who owns a car, well, even just knows how to drive, needs to also know how to change a tire. You need to have a spare in the boot at all times, yes, your trunk needs to have that spare and the toolkit to help change it. Get learning now, because this is often considered an emergency when it’s just people not knowing how to do this.
