Top Tips for your Best Headshots Yet!

Headshots are an integral part of the first impression received by potential clients or employers. Whether you’re in the arts or the corporate world, you’ll want to look your absolute best. Below, I’ve compiled a list of checkpoints that will help you present your beautiful self to the camera with charisma and class.

Finding the Perfect Photographer

Choosing a photographer for your headshots in NYC, will be your initial step. Ideally, a photographer will help you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera and capture the best in you. Many photographers have examples of their work online. You can also ask around for recommendations.

Lighting

Lighting can make or break a photograph. Consider a photographer who is willing to take your headshots in natural sunlight as it tends to impart a warm and flattering glow. If the season or weather won’t allow for outdoor photos, be sure to consult with your photographer and ask to see his or her portfolio. This way, you can ensure your photographer is skilled in a way that allows you to be seen in the most complimentary light.

Clothing Choice

When it comes to choosing an outfit for your headshots, you may find yourself reliving similar feelings to those you experienced as an insecure middle schooler on picture day. This doesn’t have to be the case. I recommend trying on several outfits, see how you feel in each one, modeling them for a trusted friend or partner to gather opinions. Be sure the color you choose doesn’t wash you out, and the fit is flattering.

Hairstyle

For your headshots, you’ll want to look polished and well styled.  Getting in front of the camera with split ends, shaggy hair, and faded color won’t yield the results you desire. The week before your headshots is the ideal time to freshen up your hairstyle at your local salon. Some stylists even offer styling lessons to help you recreate that ‘fresh from the salon’ look.

Skin and Makeup

Before making your appearance as the star of your headshots, check in with your complexion. Your skin should be clean and moisturized. I recommend doing a gentle exfoliation the day before to quell any dullness caused by a buildup of dead skin. If your skin tends to be oily be certain to invest in blotting papers, as shiny skin doesn’t look flattering on camera. If you have a drier complexion, be sure to hydrate and moisturize prior to your headshots so your complexion will look soft and fresh rather than dry and flaky.

What’s that? You have a massive pimple in the middle of your forehead? It happens to the best of us. Pat a bit of concealer onto the offending blemish and smile for the camera.

As far as makeup is concerned, choose colors that are complimentary to the outfit you’ll be wearing in your headshot.  Whether you’re wearing warm or cool colors, your makeup should reflect this, so as not to clash with your clothing. Avoid shiny or shimmery makeup as well as very matte makeup. Your goal is to glow.

Your Good Side

Some of us feel best being photographed from a certain side. If you have a side or angle you prefer, be sure to communicate this to your photographer. Usually, they will take a variety of photos from which you’ll be invited to choose. The more pictures taken from your favored side, the more options you’ll have when deciding which headshot will be the winner.

From choosing your photographer to coordinating colors, with these tips you’ll be ready to pose with confidence and share your new headshots with the world!
