There are times when it can feel a though you are stuck in your job without any discernible way to take your career farther and reach your full potential. While there is something to be said for paying your dues and working your way up, feeling as though you are constantly being overlooked for advancement opportunities can be challenging.

If you have been feeling this way about your current job situation, it might be time to take matters into your own hands and become more proactive about becoming a better candidate for promotion. This will require some extra dedication and work on your part, but if you are serious about taking the next step in your career, then there is plenty that you can do to reach your full potential.

Here are just three things that you should consider doing if you are looking to earn a promotion at work.

1. Obtain Certifications

The first thing that you will want to address when your intention is to become a better candidate for promotion at work is your CV. Are there certain areas that seem a bit thin or lacking? If so, you should look to participate in new certifications and qualifications that you can add to your resume.

This doesn’t mean that you have to go back to school full-time. Rather, you should consider the skills that people who are higher-up in your company possess and then enroll in certification programs that would equip you with those same skills.

For example, if the company you work for operates using cloud-based computing, a program that provides cloud certification training would be an ideal option for you. Not only are such courses relatively short and easy to work into your existing schedule, but they look great on a CV no matter where your career takes you.

2. Become a Team Player

One thing that might be standing in the way of you earning the promotion that you are after is your inability or reluctance to collaborate with others. While there is certainly something to be said for being the sort of person who can handle a great deal of work all on their own, teamwork is a vital part of career advancement. 

Managers are expected to be able to collaborate well with others and function as the head of a team. It will be difficult for your superiors to visualize you as the head of a team if they don’t first see you as a team player. 

3. Ask for Feedback

Sometimes it can seem as though you are doing all that you can to demonstrate to your boss just how badly you want a promotion, only to face more disappointment. In such cases, it might very well be necessary for you to speak with them directly to find out what it is that is holding you back. 

Honest critical feedback can be difficult to hear, but it is likely something missing from your skillset, or that you aren’t doing exactly right that is more obvious to your boss than it is to you.
