How To Know Whether Politicians Are Making Good Decisions

Politics is a divisive issue – more so now than at practically any time in the nation’s history. People disagree more than ever before on topics such as gun rights, energy, international trade, and climate change.

With that said, the basics of public policy remain. By and large, we know what successful public policy looks like and how to achieve it.

Today, we need good governance to help the country overcome a variety of challenges that it faces. Top of the list of priorities is making the economy stronger – something which appears to be going well right now. There’s also a need to lower the budget deficit, defend against terrorism, and find ways to fund the gaping hole in the country’s social security system. Other significant priorities include reducing crime and cutting healthcare bills.

As the following infographic shows, however, we won’t achieve any of those objectives without the right methods for implementing public policy. Governments shouldn’t make decisions based on the recommendations of lobbyists; they should choose strategies based on evidence.

If you want to know whether the officials who represent you are making good decisions, please take a look at the following infographic. It charts the major issues facing politicians today and what successful policy implementation looks like in practice. It then goes on to give some examples of sound public policy – small changes in the approach of the government that has had a profound impact on the ground.
