Are you ready to learn how to make an incredibly easy D.I.Y. portable disposable charcoal grill? These are perfect for tailgating (we’re a football-loving family) summer day trips or travel of any type. Or even for those of you who love the taste of some of the best burgers on the grill but hate the mess afterward. It will save you so much room in your vehicle if you’re traveling.

Before I get to that, I want to talk about photography for a minute which is important to me. I love capturing our summer memories for photo books or even just to share online.

Now, I have to be honest and say that when cell phone companies started adding cameras to phones, I was not on board with the idea. I was a DSLR shooter and I never in a million years believed I could get the same picture quality with a smartphone.

It took a little persuasion before I was on board with the idea of using cell phone cams but since then, mobile cameras have made a believer out of me.

Fast forward to this past weekend when I flew to Chicago for the weekend. I left my digital camera behind because it’s heavy and bulky and more importantly because my new LG L59 Grace takes equally impressive photos and it’s small enough that I can stick it in my pocket. I no longer have to worry about packing my camera for long trips, charging the batteries for it, nor with trying to keep up with my memory cards.

My new cell phone photo was taken with an old cell phone. You can clearly see how bright and clear the images are on it vs my old cell phone. My old cell phone cam gives off a yellowish type tinge to my photos but my new one shows the true colors.

Not only is my new phone helping me pack lighter, I’m saving money with my switch to the Walmart Family Mobile $49.88 TRULY Unlimited Talk, Text, & Data◊ plan. I know this is going to be hard to believe but I get Unlimited Talk and Text, and TRULY Unlimited data. Can you guess what I’m going to do with the money I save? I’m going to make this a little fun. By switching to my new mobile service, I’m saving money and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time now (I had to wait for my contract to end with my old service). It was so fast and convenient to set up that I set it up, packed for a trip, cooked lunch, and all within an hour. It took mere minutes to set up so I had the rest of the hour to multitask and call all of my family with my new TRULY Unlimited Data. Can you say that about setting up your current mobile service?

If you’re ready to let Walmart Family Mobile make your summer better, head to Walmart to check out the new Samsung J3 or LG L59 Grace and make the switch to an affordable and reliable service that really is TRULY Unlimited. Just a little heads up, you can make the switch to Walmart Family Mobile and keep your own phone if that is the route you want to go. No monthly contract! No Activation Fees. No Late Fees.

I love all of the summer fun I’m having with my new phone. I’m taking photos galore (and playing Township on it lol). With the savings, I’m actively creating summer fun D.I.Y. projects. An example of that would be this ah-mazing DIY throw-away charcoal grill that I can use anywhere provided I have a concrete block or a concrete slab under it. As much as I love grilling out and grilled food, I despise having to clean a large grill, not to mention trying to haul one around.

When I’m home, I use a baking pan under mine because the neighbor’s kids are curious and I want a layer of protection between the disposable lasagna pans I use and them. I also use a cookie rack when I’m home on top of the disposable grill tops, just because I usually throw more on the grill for leftovers than I would when I’m out glamping or camping.

  3. The good thing about this is that it’s easy enough that anyone can make this grill. $5 makes 2.

  4. This is perfect. It take 1/4 to 1/2 SMALL bag of charcoal that would easily fit in a gallon size Ziploc bag. Leaves plenty of room for anything else.

  5. You’re killing me. I am dying to just take off and go camping. If the wonderful aroma of grilling food doesn’t relax anyone, I don’t know what will.

  6. It’s so easy to pack and take along. We made some of these during the #HurricaneIrma unwanted visit.

  12. This would be great to take along for hiking/camping trips. I will have to let my boys know about this. They’ve been in and out of the house this summer, camping with friends. This disposable grill would help in packing light.

  13. This is such a great idea! I’m going to show my hubby, and I sure he will want to re-create this.

  14. This is so cool to be able to make a DIY disposable charcoal grill. I can imagine using it so many different places while on trips. Thanks for the great idea here.

  15. OMG this is a genius idea!!! We go down the shore every summer for about a week as a mini-trip, and the house we rent out never has a grill. I need to try this next time we go – maybe a spontaneous, second trip is in order so I can try it out?! Haha!

  16. Walmart Family Mobile is a great service. We used it a few years back for my oldest daughter and she has kept it all these years. I love how convenient a good cell phone can make our lives with organizing.

  17. That’s awesome! I think it’s nice that cellphone companies are trying to make better cameras these days. At least we don’t have to bring our cameras with us all the time and still be able to take quality photos! This charcoal grill idea is the best!

  18. I could definitely do with a DIY disposable charcoal grill as I don’t have anywhere to put a full on grill. I am loving the that phone and the plan

  24. When my kiddo is older I am going to get him a phone that had no contract because I want him to learn how to handle a cell phone plan and not go over on the minutes. I think Walmart has some great phones and plans to do this! That food looks SO good! I didn’t even know you could get all these things for a portable grilling surface!

  25. The portable grill is such a clever idea. Great for a day at the park! I’ll share the info about the phone with someone I know who this would fit their needs right now! Cell phone cameras take fabulous pictures, don’t they! Sometimes, you can’t tell the difference if it was DSLR!

  26. Having a portable grill is so handy when we are out camping. Sometimes even at home when we don’t feel like cleaning up a mess. Very easy to use.

  27. This is a genius idea! If I ever find myself needing a portable disposable grill, I’m so doing this. I love that you only need three items to make this grill.

  28. I love the portable grills but most apartments do not allow for grills, even disposable ones. There are two important reasons why barbecues are prohibited on a balcony. One is the potential fire hazard, the other is environmental. Strong cooking odours and thick smoke will definitely drift into a neighbour’s windows or common areas, including hallways, where smoke detectors may be activated.

  29. Victoria Heckstall

Such a great idea to be. I will do this next week for them to not buy a grill anymore. and to save more money. Such a handy thing.

  30. What a great idea to be so clever. We love to camp out and grill. I would also use that basket for vegetables!

  37. I never thought of making disposable grills like this! I’ve made upcycled ones before out of wheel wells and old grills from the cooker, but never like this. Genius idea!

  38. Wow! What a handy little disposable grill. Perfect for summer road trips and boating adventures.

  39. Helene Cohen Bludman

My son and DIL live in an apartment and I think this would work great for them. I know they miss having BBQs!

  44. It is great that your phone is helping you ‘pack lighter’. I like the idea of a disposable charcoal grill, I can imagine that would be so handy if you are travelling and want a bbq meal x

  45. Now this is such a good idea, we wouldn’t have room for a BBQ in our garden but we could definitely look at doing this a couple times of year!

  46. You are going to use the money you save on
    1. craft supplies
    2. fancy clothes
    3. more craft supplies
