How to Find Time for Your Hobbies as an Adult

When you become an adult, you undoubtedly have very little free time. The extra responsibilities and pressures of adulthood can leave you feeling overwhelmed. You’ve got the kids to drop off at school before shooting off for a long day at work, only to come home to several house chores to do. Before you know it, the day is over and you’ve spent no time on yourself.

This is why it is so important to find hobbies. Things that bring you joy and allow you to relax after a hard day at work. Here are some simple steps on how you can find the hobbies you love as an adult.

1. Spend Time Away from the Screens

Our phones and laptops are extremely helpful, and sometimes necessary, for us to complete our work. However, you might find yourself spending hours of your free time mindlessly scrolling on social media, window shopping, or checking your emails.

To create time for a hobby, it’s a good idea to put your technology away and instead focus on doing things away from the screens. Some great hobbies that can help you stay clear of your phone include knitting, sewing, cooking, or writing. All of these are super easy to start. You can buy yourself a computerized sewing machine and make your own clothes. Or you could get yourself a beautiful journal to write in.

2. Spend Your Time Wisely

Time is limited. There are only so many hours in your day. If you spend most of it mindlessly scrolling on your phone, or staring at the TV watching random programmes, you are leaving yourself no time to spend enjoying your hobbies. Next time you have a few hours spare, dedicate them to your favourite relaxation activities. When you start spending your time more wisely, you will find you have lots more free time.

3. Time Batch Your Work

When you have a long list of things on your to-do list, you find yourself spending all day working to try and get them all ticked off. Time batching is a technique used by many to increase efficiency. It involves dedicating a chunk of time to just one task, instead of alternating between more than one task. By becoming more efficient with your work time, it leaves you more free time that you can spend on your hobbies.

4. Find a Friend

Finding a friend to participate in your hobbies with you is a great way to hold you accountable. If you promise your bestie that you’re going to meet them to go swimming one evening, or join them in the local knitting club, you’re more likely to actually make time to do these activities.

5. Schedule

Most people love to schedule their work hours on their calendars, but many people completely neglect to block out time for hobbies. Next time you’re planning your upcoming week of activities, make sure to leave room for your hobbies.
