Your Guide to Troubleshooting Garbage Disposals

Is your garbage disposal showing signs of failure? Unsure if it’s a minor issue that will go away on its own or if it’s a sign that your system’s in need of replacement? We’re here to help!

In this article, we’re covering tips on troubleshooting garbage disposals. So, you can determine if it’s an issue you can address on your own or if you should hire a professional to handle the problem.

Signs Your Garbage Disposal Is Broken

A garbage disposal is a great way to get rid of unwanted food and debris. Unfortunately, it can easily break if you use it incorrectly. Here are some signs your garbage disposal might be failing.

There’s a Bad Smell

Is there a foul odor coming from your garbage disposal? If so, that may be the first sign something’s not working properly.

When a garbage disposal breaks it’s unable to cut up the larger pieces of food that goes into it. This food then rots inside of the sink, which creates an easily detectable foul odor. So, if you run the disposal and the smell continues to remain, you’re most likely dealing with a broken disposal.

 Water is Leaking

Another sign of broken garbage disposal is a water leak. This usually indicates that the inner part of the disposal is broken, but a leak can be caused by other problems as well. If this is the case for you, you’ll want to hire a trained professional to handle the issue as they’ll have all the tools needed to quickly fix it.

The Garbage Disposal Is Jammed

While a jammed garbage disposal can be resolved, it can often create significant problems if improperly addressed. Using a garbage disposal when it’s jammed can cause the motor to overheat and burn out. Which is a costly part to replace.

So, if you notice a jam, proceeded with caution. And if the problem doesn’t quickly resolve itself, hire a plumber or septic service expert to come by to inspect your garbage disposal further.

Troubleshooting Garbage Disposals

Are you looking to fix your garbage disposal on your own? While we don’t recommend this, there are some effective ways to diagnose the problem so you can better understand what needs to be done to fully fix your garbage disposal.

Listen for Sounds

The easiest way to troubleshoot whether or not there’s an issue with your disposal is by listening for any problematic sounds it could be making. If you hear a humming noise, the motor is most likely unable to rotate. In either of these situations, it’s best to call a plumber to address this issue or else run the risk of expensive repairs.

Clear the Jam

Are you experienced with clearing jams? If so, you may be able to fix that issue on your own.

To clear a jam, insert a hex wrench that is a1/4-inch into the hex-shaped hole in the underside of the disposal. Then crank the wrench in both directions a few times to free-up the impellers from the jam.

Need Help With Your Garbage Disposal?

If your garbage disposal is acting up, it’s best to address the problem sooner than later. Or else you run the risk of having to replace the whole thing. Thankfully, with the troubleshooting garbage disposals tips in this article, you can determine if fixing it is a DIY project or if you should hire an expert.
