How to renovate your home with ease

Once you have found the home of your dreams, moved in all your precious belongings, and settled into the rhythm of daily life, you can start to forget about maintaining this wonderful living space you have found. Your busy work schedule and the scarce time you get to spend with friends or alone will take time away from you making your home look as dreamy as when you first came in to view it. Nowadays, being able to own your own home is a real achievement, and it would be a crying shame to let that wonderful house you have found become cluttered and mismatched. In this how-to guide, you are going to find out some of the steps you can take to make your living spaces beautiful as well as functional, without having to get the professionals in and spending a small fortune.

Sorting out the essentials

Before you even think about decorating or buying anything new, you need to sort out the essentials. Go around your home and find out if there are any repairs which need doing or if anything essential needs to be replaced, such as the boiler. By getting the boring stuff out of the way first, you are then freed up to get really creative with how you turn your house into a luxury, personalized haven for you and all those that live with you. Of course, fronting the cost of something like a new boiler is difficult, and you may initially think that doing these necessary upgrades will slow you down as you try and redecorate but there are options available to you. For example, if you have a look at Bonsai Finance, you can get some great advice about pay-day loans that could cover the expenses of the boring bits and bobs, so that you don’t have to dip into your savings.

Update and personalize

One thing most people will agree on is that they like to save money and, in these modern times, saving the planet is high on everyone’s agenda too. One way you can accomplish both of these goals while doing up your home is to take the furniture you already have and, instead of throwing it out for something new, learn how to refurbish it. Knowing how to restore old furniture is a learning curve, especially if you have never done it before, but you don’t have to do anything too drastic. One of the easiest things you can do with some old wooden chairs is sand them down and give them a new lick of paint so they can become a pop of color in your dining room.

A colorful décor

Speaking of color, it is amazing what a good color scheme can do for space. Simply by repainting the rooms, you can make your home seem bigger and maximize the natural light; the trick is to learn how to pick a color palette for your whole house. A good place to start with this is to go into the first room you want to shake up and see what is already in there that is a focal point. It could be a big, statement painting on the wall, a colorful, plush rug, or even just the patterned fabric on your sofa. See what colors are present in this focal point of the room and draw colors from this to use for painting the walls and getting accessories and ornaments. One great idea is to have an accent wall of bright color and paint the other three with a complimentary neutral tone. This idea will allow you to have a clear focal point to the room without the stand-out color becoming too overwhelming and the neutral shade you pair it with. Ideally, a lighter, less pigmented color, will make the most of reflecting the natural light in the space.

Making room

A great way of renovating your home while being practical at the same time is to look into making some creative, DIY storage solutions. These ideas can be especially great for smaller spaces, but in any size of the home, DIY means you can customize to your preferred tastes and make things original, in keeping with your color theme and décor ideas, while also having the added benefit of giving you extra space so your home need not ever be cluttered again. An idea gaining popularity is that of having shelves that run the parameter of an entire room, placed at around twelve inches from the ceiling. This solution is great because it can keep your favorite novels, photo albums, and journals out of harm’s way and uses wall space that is often left untouched. The idea can also be adapted to be much lower in the room if, for example, you are a wheelchair user.

Keeping things cozy

No matter what the season, you will want to have a home that is cozy and comfortable and a  great way to achieve this is to find blankets and throws you can make yourself. It doesn’t matter if you are not a whizz with a needle and thread or have never learned how to knit as there are loads of ways you can make your own, gorgeous, comfy throws without sewing at all. For example, one great idea is to take an old throw that you still like but needs some life injected into it and cut about three-inch-wide, four-inch-deep sections around the edges. Then, take some colorful material or yarn and tie each one off at the base to create simple tassels that will make the blanket look new while also giving it some much-needed character. If you can do some basic sewing, then why not buy some cheap but funky edging from a haberdashery and sew the edge of your throw with some new color and texture?

There are lots of ways you can make your house look amazing again, once you have the needed repairs sorted, that neither break the bank nor take up too much of your time.
