The pirate king of Somalia, diary

The pirate king of Somalia, diary

I have a fascination with history and all things past and sometimes present. I came across a Blank Vintage Retro Embossed Leather Bound Journal Notebook Diary for sale on eBay and I snatched it up. The only reason I truly wanted it was because the pirate information caught my eye. What a fun way to write down my daily thoughts while wondering about the pirate king of Somalia. After receiving my journal, I began researching this man of mystery. A real pirate (?) indeed.

I thought the pirate king was a pirate during days gone by but I was shocked (and disappointed) to read that until recently, he was a true to life, sea bandit who retired in 2013. I guess I’ve lived a sheltered life because I did not know such things existed today. I was really hoping to read of the past when I started my research, not of a pirate in this day and time.

I’ve since found many other embossed leather bound journals on eBay and I’m planning to get one for each of the sons and grandsons for Christmas. This time, I’ll purchase a blank journal. I would not want it perceived that I was encouraging piracy or any other acts of violence and disgrace by giving them a journal such as the one I received. I didn’t go into in-depth on my research nor will I on such a person as the pirate king of Somalia.

I have a little more knowledge of the world that I could have gone my whole life without wanting to know anything about, and which resulted from the curiosity of my purchase, but I was deeply troubled to realize that I own something of this said pirate. I have since decided to pack it away and leave it for the next generation to research.

  1. Though the history of it does not appeal to me I do love the look and the tribal designs coveting this journal. I too have lived a sheltered life but for the most part it is due to my very own ignorance of the world around me.

  2. Ok maybe I am sheltered or a little uneducated on this as well but wow, there are still modern day pirates? I had no clue! I am very intrigued and makes me want to do some research on modern pirates! Wow I am still in shock but this is kinda historical and cool that is sold on Ebay!

  3. That is a beautiful journal, but I didn’t know the history or story about this situation. You can literally find anything on ebay nowadays, huh?! I know there was a movie made about Somalian pirates, but I never saw it.

  4. They made a movie based off of the Somalia pirates, it had Tom Hanks in it I believe, I have yet to see it. But it looked really good. The design on the leather is amazing to say the least, it sucks it’s made by people I wouldn’t want to support. But it’s really beautiful.

  5. Was he in the pirate movie with Tom Hanks? Those were modern-day pirates I think. But 2013? That’s so recent!!
What a cool journal to own. I bet your friends and family would like having old journals too.

  6. Yeah, Somalia has a pretty serious piracy problem off the coast currently, which is sad. One of my sister’s ex-boyfriends worked in the shipping industry, and he would tell us about all of these safety measures that these tankers and shipping containers have to take when sailing along Somalia’s coastline. It’s scary! The journal looks incredibly cool with all that embossing, but that stinks that it’s basically supporting some very violent. people. You live and you learn, right? :)

  7. That is a gorgeous leather embossed journal you picked up on eBay (from the first glance). I knew Pirates still existed but it’s strange to see people selling stuff like that on eBay now, as opposed to one from the past, so I understand your disapointment!

  8. What an interesting read! I guess I live a sheltered life too because I had no idea things like that really exsisted either! It’s still a really beautiful diary, are any still available for sale or is this more of a collectors item?
